from London one or two days later than the telegraphic announcement of (as ressived here) the defeat of the Govern- ment, and it also seems to have resched this Colony half an hour later than the correction of that telegram, so that it is pretty certain "the motion" in question refers to a resolution brought forward in the House subsequently to the dis. posal of the Afghan, business. The zumbars-235 against 125, total 960- do not indicate that a point of very great importance was involved in "the motion. The House of Commona numbers 058 members, comprising 300 from England and Wales, 105 from Ireland, and 53 from Scotland, and on questions of great importance in the House, the total number of votes. would be sure to exceed 360, even during any. extraordinary session of Parliament. The truth of this is evidenced by the circums stance that the total votes given on the Afghan question number, according to the telegram, no less than 555. ANA Intelligence should be shortly received of further important operations in Afghanistan, that is, if it in the intention to advance to Cabul before the return of the warm weather. The withdrawal of the Russian Mission from Cabul would, at all events, seem to signify that the Ozar spprehends a speedy entry or blockade of the Afghan capital by the British forces. Our latest telegraphic advices placed General Roberts at the Shutar Gaujdan Pass, about fifty miles from Cabul, and the Khyber force somewhere in the neighbourhood of Jelalabad, about ninety miles from the Capital. Surely the conciliatory reply to the ultimatum received from the Ameer, after his troops had suffered one or two severe defeata, will not stop the advance.
