Deceased apparently had no business on the Pier at all. One of the witnesses who saw deceased in the Canteen left him at 8.80 to go off to the Meanes, presumably going via the Commissariat Pior, which, it was stated in the evidence, was "always used" by the men going off to the hospi tal ship. As deceased was seen between 8.30 and 9 o'clock going towards the Commissariat, it would seem that he could not have reached the Pier more than half an hour, at the utmost, behind this witness. The ovidence of these, and the other witnesses went to show that deceased was sober at the time he met his death. The two witnesses who saw him at about 8.30 stated he was perfectly sober; the third who saw him walking towards the Commissariat said he appear
