Mr Lochler, after making some general remarks upon these assertions, said that he held in his haud a letter from Honolula, written by a Chineso there, The contents of that letter were to the i effect that the Christians who had. omigrated from China to the Sandwich Islands sent their beartiost greetings to the missionaries of the Basol Mission, who had, while they were in China, taught them the Christion religion, Being also conscious of the great 'obliga. tions they were under to the Basel Mission they had resolved voluntarily to, collect some money for the henefit of the Mission. The collection, had amounted to $137; and this they had great pleasure. were sixty signatures to the letter, so in forwarding to Mr Lechler.

that the donation would be, on the average, $2.25 a head. Considering that most of these Chinese emigrated because they were so poor that they found it impossible to provide for their own and their families' maintenance in China, the subscribing of this money not only-disposes of Mr Bidwell's assertion that Chinese became Christians for the sake of the loaves and fishes they thus secure, but is also conclusive evidence that the Chinese immigranta in the Sandwich Islands must be fairly pro sperous and contented.
