stand the usefulness of such a motion, seeing that the necessity for a Corps bas never been questioned, and that residents have been canvassed by the officers to join the ranks and refused. It is, the system under which the Corps is worked that seems rather to be impugned, and the meeting was called to devise measures whereby it might be restored to its former state of efficiency. However, no-harm has been done by the expression of the opinion that a Volunteer Corps was still a necessity in the Settlement, and as the meeting was adjourned with the view to obtain a larger attendance by holding it after business hours in the evening, it is presumed that few, if any, will sign the lists before the next meeting is held, when practically, we should say, the proceedings will begin de Novo. A second resolution was proposed and seconded, in favour of a uniformity in the style of uniform, bat it was not sub mitted to the voto.

A romarkably sudden death occurred on Tuesday evening. Mr. M. R. Edwards, a well-known Yangtsze pilot, leftsome frionds at five o'clock in the afternoon to go to his home in the neighbourhood of the Soochow Creek, and two hours afterwards ho was found to be dead. A NOVEL mode of gambling and evading criminal prosecution was brought to our notice to-day, viz, betting on the result of a game of ten pins. A number of coolles were assembled round the windows of the Cosmopolitan Club this afternoon, where they could see a party of foreignors playing bowls, and they bet 5 or 10-cash as the case might be on the number of pins which would fall at each throw.. A good deal of native money is said to change hands in this way.

Ir may perhaps not be known to house holders what usually becomes of their soup meat, and for their information we may mention that it is sold by their cooks to keepers of stalls in the Chinese markets, who re-sell it to the poor Providing this Is done with the knowledge and sanotion of the householder, well and good; but we believe that cooks are in the habit of pur chasing for more soup-ment than is neces sary, for the very purpose of making a preft on it, and they do not boll it suffi cleatly as otherwise it would be unsaleable. One evening the attendance at their performance was mis- erably small through a continuous and heavy down-pour of rain, and on another occasion a few days age an entertainment elsewhere tended to lessen the patronage sesorded to the Company.
