6th October, 1878. The fighting between the Chinese and Savages is nearly ended.
A lot of copper dollars have been imported here lately-one junk having arrived from Amoy with 2,000 copper dollars and two janke from Hongkong; one with 1,500 and the other with 3,000. Many people are cheated with those dollars, and I think that steps hayo been taken by the authorities to find them out. The dollars are like Mexi- cans with a few chops on them silvered over, They are not even white copper but red and can easily be detected.

I heard him tell one of the boatmen who I was and where I came from, at the same time offering to give me to him for three dollars. I cried very much when I saw I had been separated from my mother, but I did not feel otherwise unhappy, for I was very well treated. The wind was against us, and we must have taken 10 or 10 days in reaching Macao. The sailor took me on shore when we arrived at Macao to a foreigner's house-so large Elero he sold me and so handsome it was.
