During the three years of mourning for his father, he studied English with so much diligence and success as to be now able to make himself fairly well under- stood in that language. He associates a great deal with foreigners in Peking, and appears to be one of the progressive school. We remember it was stated about twelve months ago that he had been appointed Minister to France, but that report is proved by the lapse of time to have been without foundation. Why Kwo has been recalled at this juncture we are unable even to conjec ture. We doubt very much if strictly state reasons have anything at all to do with the step, and it is quite possible that a desire on the part of Kwo to get back to China, per haps for reasons of health, or a desire on the part of the Marquis of Taing to moving influences in the matter.
