UNDER the hoading "Death of a Spanish Official," the New York Herald of July 15th quotes the following from the Keokuk Gate Oity, of July 9th, regarding the sudden death of Mr Consul Farando-
Among the passengers who left Connoll Bluffs on the East bound passenger train on the B. and M. R. R. at twenty minutes past five o'clock on Sunday evening was A. Faraudo, Spanish Consul at Hongkong, China. He came in on the Union Pacific road from the West, and is supposed to have been en route to his home in Spain. He was unattended except by travelling acquaintances which ho had formed on the train. Before starting from Council Bluffs he attended to checking his trunks and getting his other baggage on the train, Shortly after leaving that city he was stricken with apoplexy or heart disease, and dled in a very short time. A telegram was aent to a physician at Glenwood, twenty miles east of Council Bluffs, to be at the train, but upon ita arrival there the Consul was a corpse, Consul Faraudo was a large fine looking man, about fifty-five years of age, of splendid physique and commanding presence. He wore marks of distinction, which showed that he had been highly honored at different times by his govern- ment. He has occupied the position of Consul at Hongkong for the past three years.
(L. and C. Express, July 26th.) We are glad to be able to state that active steps are being taken at last to supply Hongkong with a Miat, under the auspicos of the Oriental Bank. The undertaking is one which is much needed, and it is estisfactory to note the success which has attended the efforts of the Chamber of Commeros. We can only wish it every anccers, a result which can hardly be doubted if it is placed under energetic and private management,

The Kiangkwan was only engaged, we understand, for about an hour in towing her off, and for her services, it is said, she will receive Tls. 10,000-the same amount the Pekin carned the China Navigation Company for doating the Loudoun Castle. In former years the charge was Tla. 6,000 for towing off an ocean steamer which had the misfortune to ground in the Yangtze, but this year the river steamer Companies, we are informed, mutually agreed to charge Tls. 10,000, and have carried out the arrangement. THE performance of "Genevieve de Bra. bant" last Saturday evening by the Royal English Opera Company was on the whole successful. Special mention ought perhaps to be made of the handsome dresses, and of the generally creditable way in which the Opera was put on the stage. Vernon (as the Duks, and as Grab the gendarmes) was the soul of the piece, and sang and acted admirably throughout. There is a versatility about this actor which is quite wonderful, and we should not be surprised at his attempting, and even succeeding in, anything from low comedy up to high tragedy. He is decidedly a host in himself; and his efforts on Saturday, some of which were extremely happy, were most warmly applauded. As Drogan Miss May seemed better in her singing that in her acting; but, with Miss Stanley (sa Genevieve), she'seoured au encore for the Balcony duet.
