THE CHINA MAIL.

HONGKONG, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 21, 1878.

WRITING recently on the subject of the Marriage Ordinance of this Colony, wo quoted the following paragraph from the report of the Commission appointed to consider the Ordinance at the time of its passing the Legislative Council: "Your Committee finds that the Bill is drawn up in accordance with an Ordinance passed in Ceylon so long ago as 1863, and although the staff of Roman Catholic Clergy in that Colony is far larger than in Hongkong no public complaints have been made leading us to believe that the mossure is not successful in its operation or objectionable to all those whom it con cerns" Our contemporary, The Hongkong Catholic Register, referring to this portion of the report of the Commission, alleges that it is "authorised to enter the most formal protest on the part of their Lord- ships the two Vicars-Apostolic in Ceylon against such an utterly false assertion that no public complaints have been made, etc."

The point of the Register's recent lucu- brations on the Marriage Ordinance has been that the Catholics of Hongkong, Ceylan, and other British Colonies should be granted matrimonial enact ments similar to those in force in India.

The Catholics of Calcutta, Madras, Bombay, and all that part of India, subject to British rule, have," says our contemporary, "a marriage law which respects our scruples of conscience, and the law is working extremely well to the full satisfaction of the British Go
