On page 6 we find the statistics of the annual value of the trade with Hongkong and each country from 1870 to 1877. In regard to Hongkong, these returns effectually demolish any impressions that the trade of this Colony is languishing. During the whole seven years the value of the trade carried on in foreign hottama between Hongkong and the Treaty Porta was never greater than in 1877, when the total import trade from this Island attained a value of The. 30,588,234, and the export trade a value of Tis 17,631,689 -grand total, Tis, 48,219,923, which in about half a million of taals more than the

lost sight of in considering the commar. cial prosperity of this Colony. The last report of the Harbour Master shows that the native vessels trading to this port are manfully maintaining their own, in 1876 the total value of the trade in foreign bottoms between the Treaty Ports and Hongkong was Tls, 46,011,968, as against Tia. 48,219,929 last year. The returns show that this branch of the China trade the branch in which we are most interested has been steadily and unfailingly increasing during the whole Beven years Covered by these statistion In 1870 it was some thirteen-or-fourteen millions of taels less than in 1877. Cer

ain it is, that, if the profits on trade here are far less, the trade itself is far greater, or these statistics must be worthless.

From the statistics of the not import of foreign goods from foreign countries, Yoko.we learn that the total quantity of Opium imported into the Treaty Porta during the year was 70,216 picuis, as against 69,850 in 1876; Cotton Goods, Tla 18,955,795, as against Ths. 20,216,246 in 1876; Woollen Goods, Tls. 4,830,683, as against Tla, 4,259,281 in 1876; Metala, The 4,354,799 as against Tis. 3,692,804 in 1876; Sundries, Tls. 73,497,360, as against Tls 70,289,574 in 1876.
