OXYGEN IS LIFE.

Although the modern Materia Modica includes many valuable remedies for human afflictions, it is a matter of certainty that in all cases where the animal vitality is failing, Phosphorus is decidedly superior to every other remedy at known. HE widely expressed regret at the dir

THE CHINA REVIEW, or Notes and. Queries on the Far East, is issued at in tervals of two months, each number con- taining about 60 ootavo pages, occasionally illustrated with lithographe, photographi, woodents, &c., should the papers published domand, and the circulation justify, suol extra matter.

The subscription is fixed at $0.50 postage paid, per annum, payable by non-residents in Hongkong half-yearly in advance,

The publication Includes papers original and selected upon the Arts and Sciences, Ethnology, Folklore, Geography, History, Literature, Mythology, Manners and Cus- toms, Natural History, Religion, &o, &o, of China, Japan, Mongolia, Tibet, the Eastern Archipologo and the "Far Mant generally. But a chemical process has now been discovered, by which its invaluable action on the human system may be realised without any of those drawbacks which previous modes of administration have invariably produced.

CAUTION.-PHOSPHORUS is sometimes sold in the form of Pills & Lozenges; it should be generally known that every form where colid particles of Phosphorus are in combination is dangerous. It is therefore neccesary that the piklio should be cautioned against the use of any preparation of Phosphorus not perfectly soluble

THE NEW CURATIVE AGENT, AND ONLY RELIABLE by the number now before us, is intended to occupy a position, as regards Chins and the neighbouring countries, somewhat similar to that which has been filled in India by the Calcutta Review. The great degree of at tention that has been bestowed of late years upon the investigation of Chinese literature, antiquities, and social developments, to say nothing of linguistic studies, has led to the accumulation of important stares at URL ation, rendering some such channel of pub- ficity an in now provided extremely desir- able; and contributions of much interest may fairly be looked for from the members of the foreign consular services, the Chinese Customs' corps, and the missionary body, among whom a high degree of Chinese scholarship is now assiduously cultivated, and who are severally represented in the first number of the Review by papers highly creditable to their respective authora... In a paper on Dr. Legge's She King, by the Rev. E. J. Eitel, to which the place of honour is deservedly given, an excellent summary is presented of the chronologicat problems and arguments involved in can. nexion with this important work. Some are marked by both accuracy and freshness translations from Chinese novels and plays of style; and an account of the career of the Chinese poet-statesman of the eleventh century, Su Tung-p'o, by Mr. E. C. Bowra, is not only historically valuable, but is also distinguished by its literary grace. Beside notices of new books relating to Chins and the East, which will be a useful feature of the Review, if carried out with punctuality and detail, we are glad to notice that "Notes" and "Queries are destined to find a place in its pages also. It is to be hoped that this opening for contributions on Chinese subjects may evoke a similar degree of literary goal to that which was displayed during the lifetime of Its prede Censor in the field, and that the China Review may receive the support necessary to insure Its continuance. The publication is intend ed to appear every two months, and will form a substantial ostavo magazine.
