THE ASSASSINATION OF THE JAPANESE MINISTER FOR HOME AFFAIRS. (Japan Mail.)
***
It was our painful duty to record on Tuesday last, the 14th instant, another of those dastardly assassinations which have from time to time disgraced the history of this country. His Ex. Okubo Toshimichi, Minister of Interior, was on his way to the Daekuan, to take part in the ceremony of conferring decorations on certain officers of the Army and Navy who had taken part in the late war. At a lonely part of the road just outside the castle ment, about midway all of whom, believe, profees to take a between the Kui-chigai Gate and the Impe lively interest in foreign hospital work.rial Palace at Akasaka, the carriage passed It must doubtless be gratifying to the two men, dressed like students, who appeared medical directors of these institutions to to be amusing themselves plucking Howers, find their good work recognised by the Just then the estringe turned down by the native officials, but we should all be better yashiki of Mr Mibu, a kazoku, whereupon pleased if the Chinese authorities showed four men dashed from their concealment in a some disposition, however slight, to enforce dilapidated outhouse into the middle of the certain argent sanitary precautions-by the road, one being armed with a long sword aid of which, much of the prevailing and the others with dirke. MESSA HEINEMANN & Co.'s Freight Cir- onlar for the Mail of Saturday, Jat June,
Since the date of last Report, the market has continued dull and work, and the large amount of tonnage lately arrived will tend to make freights even lower, as demand in any direction is but amall for eltlier steamers or sailing vessels,
Homewards, only two settlements are reported, and very low rates are now offer ed from this port for aalling vessels. From the Philippines there is but little Inquiry at extremely low freights.
Coastwise, demand for the North has been slacks, and rates are lower. For Baug kok and the Cochin China Ports a small business has been done, and vessels are still wanted. For Saigon a few charters have been effected, but at low rates, and the demand is very uncertain,
From Foochow to the Colonies some small
vessels have been taken up, but the rates paid are much lower than those of last
season.
The German ship Regulus, 1,115 tons, will leave for San Francisco, and the American ship Sabramento, 1,418 tons, for Manila, both under orders from home. The German bark Hans, 812 tons, left for Chefoo" seeking."

SILE.-Supposed settlements of Now Silk are 200 bales Thatlee reel, 150 of which will probably go forward by outgoing mail steamer. There may be further contracts in hand, but it is difficult to ascertain what has really been, done, and prices paid have hot transpired. Native dealers are asking $860 per pioul for No. 4 Kowkong Taatlee and on that basis for other grades, but these figures are somewhat in excess of the ideas of the most foreign operators. Judging from musters shown, the quality of the orop is fair to good, and the thread fairly clean, the color however is rather dingy; there is said to be an unusually large quan tity of five silk.
An abundant second yield is looked for, as leaves are in large supply, and the weather no far has been propitions.
Of Long-reels, 120 pleuls of Seulum, Kowkong and other sorts have been settled for export to India.
Re-reela of New Crop have not been dealt in, and no offers are being made for these descriptions.
Stock in Canton is estimated at about 400 bales Teatloo, and 25 bales of Cumshuck and Lucklow.
