we have no sympathy for the men, for we have no doubt that the 10 per cent. reduction in their wages was rendered necessary by the exigencies of trade. Masters can only afford to pay their men. in proportion to the prices obtained for their goods, and it is well known that the Lancashire mill-owners are not able to make the large fortunes now-a-days that they once did. Wages in England mush to a very great degree, be regulated by those on the Continent, where equally intelligent and clever workmen can be. : found, at least in the manufacture of auch articles au form the staples of Ein. glish trade.
