work of education as St. Joseph's Col- loge, but matters have taken such a turn, that we almost regard it as a duty wo owe to the other educational establish ments of the Colony, to make one or two remarks in regard to the Bishop's school. It was pointed out in these columns the other day that there was vast difference between teaching Ea ropeans English, and turning out native scholars in that language. The sequire- ment of a passable knowledge of English le infinitely more difficult for a China-- roan time & Portugness, who already speaks a language, which, compared with Chinese, is the key of the English tongue. The habits, thought, lore, arti culation, and surroundings, also help Portuguese In acquiring our language, while their very bread must depend in the majority of cases upon their know- ledge of it. Each Chinese pupil in the Central School is taught English four hours each day by, we believe, European instruators, who no doubt are quite as capable of imparting a good knowledge of English na the Christian Brothers and, however much we may be inclined to endorse Mr Hennessy's desire, which is a sound one, to spread the knowledge of the English language in the Colony, we fail to see how he could justify much more than four hours instruction in that tongue daily, or what he means when be
