John Henry Both, an engineer uneme ployed, was charged by licensed chair-coolls No. 565 with having engaged his shair on the 21st instant and not paying same. It appears that some one had engaged the complainant's chair, and was carried from the British Hotel to the Sallor's Home and did not pay him, and last night he saw the defendant in the British Hoteland demanded payment. - The defendant pushed him away. Fortunately the defendant was able to prove that he had never left his house on the night of the 21st after 8 o'clock, or he might have had to pay the claim, as the complainant swore positively that he was the person who had engaged the chair. It seems to ns that if we read Ordinance No. 14 of 1845 rightly it requires not that a man shall be detained in custody for a fortnight before any investigation of his case takes place before a Magis trate, but that he shall be brought before the Bench as soon as possible. Section 21 states that every person taken into custody without a warrant "shall be forthwith delivered into the custody of the constable in charge of the nexreat station-house in order that such person be secured until he can be brought before Magistrate." The Ordinance is not very explicit on the point, but it certainly indicates that persons, just arrested, are only to be detained in the station-house until they can be brought before the Bench. Anyway, in the absence of an Ordinance to a contrary effect, the conati-of tutional rights of a British subject are to be respected here, and one of the com
