E da Silva, book-keeper at the West Polat Patent Slip, on the 17th December last.

Mr Da Silva went to a money-changer's *atall to get change for a $5 note. As the money changer could not give the change, he put the note back into an envelope in which there were already four other notes, Suddenly he felt his pooked touched, sad saw the prisoner running away. He was arrested by a Chinese Lakong, who saw him throw away the envelope, in which were the five notes. They were recovered.

The prisoner, who said he only picked up the envelope and did not steal it, was found guilty.

He was then arraigned for four previous convictions, twice for larceny and "twies as a rogue and vagabond. To this Indlat ment he pleaded guilty, and was sent to three years' penal servitude.

SEMBREZLEMENT AND LARCENY.

Regina v. Choy Atang.

The prisoner pleaded guilty to two counts of embezzlement and larceny on two vessions for tasl 1.1.6, and $5 respec- tively on the 18th and 16th April, 1877, the money of his master Leong Anow. He was sent to six months' hard inbour,

Regina v Lee Ayuno, The prisoner was indicted for stealing a pair of trousers on the 10th December last, The property of Chu A Chew.

The prisoner was found guilty and was then indicted for two previons summary convictions, to which be pleaded guilty, He was sent to 18 months' Bard labour.

LARCENY.

Regina v. Tam Akwai. The prisoner was arraigned for stealing a jacket, the property of Ow A Ewat on the

4th December.

The prisoner said he picked up the jacket which he found lying on the ground,

The prisoner was found guilty, The property involved in this osse was not worth more than a cent or two cents, and his Lordship, before passing sentonco, kaked the Attorney General how these small cases come to be sent up for trisl here. The prisoner in this case bad only been convicted once before the Magistrate.

The Attorney General said the Magistrates did send up cases for trial where there was only one previous summary conviction.

His Lordship said this was really taking up the time of the Jury unnecessarily. The prisoner was thon sont to nine months' hard labour.

Regina v, Lee Ayou,

The prisoner was indicted on two counts charging him with haring possession of piratical goods and with receiving stolen gooda..

It appeared that on the 18th Decembor last, a boat laden with soms baskets of dried bean-ourd sailed from Cheung Sha When the boat was Wan for Hongkong. off the extreme western point of Stone- onster's Island, it was attacked by pirates, who came alongside in a tampan manned by orer ton men. They boarded the boat and removed all the dried bean-curd and a mat. On the day following, the prisoner engaged a cargo beat to go to Belcher's Bay, where the baskets and bags of dried bean-oard were put on board. They were taken to the Praye near tho P. & O. Wharf, and a prisoner then wanted the remainder to be portion was sold to a chandler's shop. The Belcher's Bay, but the conveyed back beatman would not do so, it being late, The prisoner then got some cooliea to' carry the remaining bags away. The Police cando to know of the matter and the prisoner was arrested.

The prisoner in his defence said he did not know that the bean-card was stolen property, He was asked by a friend to sell it, who said he brought it from Toong

koon.

The Jury found the prisoner guilty on the 2nd count,

LARCENY, &o,

Regina. Ché shop The prisoner was charged with stealing one cap, the property of Yew Fock Tin on the 21st December last. The prisoner went into to the T'ai Long shop with two others on the pretence of buying things, nad stale the cap.

A verdiet of guilty was returned. The prisoner has had two previous convlotions Bgainst him, and thego he admitted.
