a few days to roam about the city at their will, the result being that on the 2nd inst., when most of the Imperial troops had left the town on a reconnoitering expedition, the disguised rebels, with the aid of others from the outside, took forable possesion of the place, and burned down all the official buildings. Their schemes were favoured by one of the Japanese corvettes having been driven on ahere in a gale, her guns and stores being immediately solzod and utilled by the rebels. The whole re- bellion has been, miserably managed by the Imperial Government, and this seems a fitting finale to the campaign. The mala difficulty in aubduing the rebele lately, however, has been to find them, and it may be a fortunate circum stance for the Imperial cause to have the bulk of them shut up in a town. Troops are being despatched with all haste to d the spot.

The loss of the Turks was Sohipka Pass, and the evacuation of heavy. Tirnova by the Russians could only mean the evacuation of their line of communications-a step which would of course be fatal to their troops in the Balkans. If Tirnova is evacuated it may be considered pretty certain that the Schipka Pass is evaonated as well, and all hopes of the Russians reaching Adrianople before next summer must be abandoned.
