The printing of Professor Douglas's Ca- talogue of the Chinese Books in the Library of the British Museum has now been com pleted. Three hundred copies of the work are in the hands of the bindor, and will be ready for issue in a few days,
We understand that the arrangements for the issue of a new Chinese Loan are in s forward state. It is to be issued in sterling by the London office of the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank, but the amount and terms of issue are not yet decided on.
The Blue-book on. China having special reference to the Grosvenor Mission and the case of delay is attributed to the nonoom- pletion of the report of Sir Thomas Wade. The question of ratification consequently remains open. The Order in Council for the working of the Supreme Court of China and Japan is still under compilation by Sir Julian. Paincofote and other officials at the Foreign- office in connection with the Law Officers of
the Crown.
The report of the Messageries Maritimes Company for the past year is of interest as that period. Upon the whole, considering showing the working of the steamers during
the general depression of trade which has prevailed, it is of a satisfactory character.
The insurance reservo has been increased, the expenditure considerably reduced, and a dividend of 1.85 per share, or the equivalent of 7 per cent., has been declared. The directors do not anticipate such serious re- sults from the war in Europe as xaight at first be feared, and point out that the effect of an outbreak of war is generally not to diminish the wants of consumera, and that products which ordinarily would come from the countries in which the warlike operations are being conducted have to be bought from other parts of the world. The company having lines so greatly diffused may there- fore, under such circumstances, expect compensation in one direction, for what is lost in another.
In the Blue-book on the Colonies for 1875, per-dust issued, Sir Arthur Kennedy's report on made by the late governor are very concise, Hongkong is published. The observations
