James Smith and John Harry Hesse, seamen of American ship Matchless, were charged with desertion They were arrested by F. C. Penn and Clare on a descriptive return from the U. 8. Consul. The de

fendants said they belonged to the Matches ten, but bed a complaint to make to the Cousul. They went to the Consulate to make this complaint and were told that the Consul would not be visible until to-mor- row; therefore they desired to walt. The defendants were ordered to be taken on board, and the case was to be brought to the notice of the U. 8. Consul.

Tang Atung, a. tallor, was charged by Yeong Atal, a shopman in a tailor's shop wherein the defendant was also employed, with stealing a silk jacket, which had just best finished. The defendant was absent

until yesterday and was given into custody, from the shop after the robbery on the 13th On the 14th, the complainant received an anonymous letter in which was endlosed a pawnticket, which referred to the missing jacket, and the complainant bad it taken out of pawn. Le Akwal, a coolie, was charged under the following ciroumtances. A lady landed In a boat at Peddar's Wharf. She had a leather trunk, and the defendant and two others fucaped into the boat with a view to securing the porterage. There was co- siderable danger of the boat being upset by the rush. Fined $1.

Leong Aaam, a boatman, was again brought up for stealing a quantity, of gam bier from the Ying Keo Hong. The firm had 1137 plculs of this dye consigned to it from Haiphong in the steamer Washi, and the defendant's boat was engaged to dis charge the cargo. About 100 plouls were found to have been stolen.
