Yunnan is notorious amongst the Chinese for its pestilential olimate, and this particular spot has for several centuries attained such a bad char- acter as to be regarded as impassable during the hot season. The reason assigned by Chinese writers is the retention by its pre- cipitous banks of the pestilential gases brought down by the river. The authorities at Yunnan-fu described these gases as being visible to the naked eye, and invariably of green, blue, and red colour, and of causing the traveller to bleed profusely from the eyes, nose, mouth, and ears. So great was the apprehension, that the officer command ing the escort started from his lodging before daylight in order to cross the river before the sun rose. On the other side the river

The Lungohuen River, about 60 yards in breadth, was reached on the 2nd May. The country passed through was well terraced, but for the most part unculti vated, while the hills were manah more thickly covered with trees and under- growth, and the country generally began to assume a more tropical appearance, On the 3rd the Mission, after an almost sheer descent of 2,000 feet, reached the valley and city of Momain, and on the 21st arrived at Bhamo.
The telegram received here on the 39th ulto, was as follows Valparaiso, May 12th-The city of Iquiqui, in Peru, has been destroyed by an earthquake. Thus the coincidence is established; but the exact rate of speed contributed by the shook is not yet ascertainable, because the actual hour of time when the terrible
convulsion occurred is unknown to us.
Indeed, we may never ascertain the exact geographical point of the centre of action, since it may have been under the deep waters of the Ocean, instead of the crust of the Earth near Iquiqui; and in that case the distance could not be mea. sured with an exactitude to determine the speed. Yet the approximation that will be attained when we know the hour
of the event at Iquiqui, will suffice all practical purposes
