Your roaders in Shanghai will be glad to learn that their te popular Consul Mr (now Sir Walter) Medhurst was in excellent health and spirits; and appeared to take as warm an interest as over in matters con neoled with China. He was, it is needless to say, quite in his element chatting in the Mandarin dialect with the Chinese Minis ters, who I noticed treated him with mark ed respect. "

Therefore, it seems to me, that to give these damages would be to give speculative damages to give damages when we cannot be certain that the plaintiff would not have suffered just as much if the goods had arrived in time; and I think, according to the principles on which the Courts have acted in all these speculative and uncertain cases of damage of this kind, the rule is that damagesought not to be recovered. Therefore, upon the whole, we come to the conclusion that the report of the Registrar and Merchants is right. Besides quoting the Common Law authorities, they said it had never been the practice in the Court of Admiralty to give damages. Though it constantly happened, of course, that by collision goods were delayed in their arrival, it had never been the custom and, therefore, upon, the whole, we are of opinion that the conclusion which the Regis- consequence, therefore, must be that the judgment of the Court below must be revers. ed. As to the costs, the Registrar and Merchants reported that each party ought to them, and we think that ought to be retained, and the appellant should have his costs of the argument in the Court below.

We hear that the Hankow Tea Market is expected to open about the 15th instant.
We hear that the Kiang-yuen, which arrived yesterday (May 18th), brought down
chop of new teas from Kiukiang. In addition to the steamers already reported, the Hankou, the Glenartney's rival last year, and the Braemar Castle, have gone to load teas at Hankow. As did the Tartar, they came from Hongkong, and proceeded up the Yangteze without calling here.
(Courier.)
We hear that Het Tao-t'ai has lost his button, and is reported to be in danger of losing his head. His credentials from the Teung-li Yamen were, we believe, all in order, but it seems that his method of carrying out instructions in regard to the projected loan was objectionable to the high authorities.

He has met with absolute refusals from many of hie Chiefs, some half-hearted consult others, but there is not the least likelihood of the movement succeeding. Throughout Kan- dabar, Herat, and Western Afghanistan, popular feeling is in our favour. The pacification of Khelat is so.complete that the Chief of Seebe, in Afghanistan, seeks similar protection. The Ameer is intense ly unpopular owing to factions, family animosities, extortion, tax gatherers, rigo rous conscriptions, and non-payment of his array. The idea of a British alliance is growing among the Afghans..
It is gratifying to note that the town is now reported entirely free from cholera.

A very interesting account of the applica tion of oil to mitigate the raging of the sea and to relieve a vessel in a storm, has been received by the Bombay mail; in relation to the King Cedric, a vessel of 1,190 tons, whigh left Liverpool in June last for Bombay, When off the Cape of Good Hope she encoun- tered a heavy gale from the north-west, which continued for some time. mendous seas broke over the ship, bursting in the main hatch, washing away the hatch- houses and boats, smashing in the front of the cabin, and destroying the captain's and officers' stores and clothing. A young lad one of the crew, was carried overboard, and it was impossible to rescue him. The gale lasted for nearly five days, and though the vessel stood it very well it was impossible to repair any of the damage, as the waves were continually sweeping her decks. At COURT OF APPEAL.
