"I hear by private letter from Singapore that the authorities there are having some Hitherto bother with the "Celestiala," the Chinamen have had the right to post their letters home for nothing, but this. privilege has been withdrawn, and they protested by a riot. They sacked the post- office and threatened the fort, and went through the placa vowlug vengeance. As they immensely outnumber the European guard an alarm was created, and the popula tion was called to arms; but the Flying Squadron put ta for coal in the afternoon, and the mere landing of one thousand men so frightened the heathen Chines that they left the fort alone and sub- aided into quiotness. They spent a very uneasy night, fearlog apparently that they were all to be taken out and shot. They are not likely soon agaîu to demonstrate.'
