In connection with the loss of the fri'leh barque Letty Gales, which we reported in aur issue of Saturday, we have learnt the following Further particular-The Latty Gales left Amoy on the 8th instant, bound to London, with a general cargo. All went well until the morning of the 11th at 2
o'clock, when she struck on the Pratas Shoal. It was found impossible to get the vessel off, and as she was in great danger of going to pieces at any moment, the attention of the crew was given to getting away in the boats. One of the boats was store in simost immediately it was lowered over the side, and its occupants must all have perished, as assistance was quite out of the question. The remainder of the orow then eat to work to construct zafts, and six of them succeeded in getting olear of the breakers by this means; one poor lad; who was named Leonard Stusere, was wash ed away before he could obtain a footing, The mate and one man got away with a boat, and when clear of the breakers took the rest off the rafts, and they were all landed safely on Pratas Island. Here they remained until Tuesday, the 18th, when, anding no means of subsistence on the island, they put to sea again. Captain Hedgecock, the Chief Officer (Mr Joseph Chamberlain), Edward Morgan (cook and steward), Wm. Clark (seaman), and H. H. Harvy (appren tice) went in the ship's boat ; and Charles Merrick (bəstawain) thomas Hammond and * The publication of this issus commenced John Jones (seamon), with John Hazelgrove (apprentice), in a native bost which was found on the Island. The ship's boat, with its ecoupants, as we stated on Saturday, was picked up by a fishing junk the junk coming into Hongkong on purpone. There is just a possibility that the "pcoupants of] the campan may have got on shore on one of the lands, or have been picked up by noms passing vertel. The names of those who are known to be drowned are Edward Livingston, and Herbert Goodwin (seaman), Alfred Holston, Leonard Sincere, and George Edward Hedgesook (apprentice), The Letty Gales wan, we understand, fulig insured.

We are requested to state that the Public Dinner to the Governor will be given at St. Andrew's Hall, at 7.80 p.m. to-morrow. THE prizes for the Race Meeting will be deliverable at the City Hall on Wednes day, after 10 o'clock.

whom are men.
For the Marriage Ordinance of 1875 we feel deeply indebted to Your Excellency, as it tends to mark in an emphatic manner the equality of all Christians in the eye of the Executive, Irrespective of difference of race or nationality, whilst at the same time it draws a distinct line of demarcation between. those whoprofeas Christianity and those who do not, by waking its requirements binding upon the former only. We regard this ordinance as helping toward that elevation of sentiment with regard to the sanctity of the marriage tle which belongs so peculiarly to Christendom, the absence of which is 40 deplorable a feature in heathen society and
constitutes a great hindrandu to evangelistfe effort.
But that enactment- which calls forth our deepest feelings of gratitude is one to which we believe Your Excellency will ever be able to look back with feelings of pro- foundest satisfaction, one with which we believe Tour Excellency's name will ever be associated in this Colony as the origin ator of one of the winest, most efflsiant and philanthropia plans which has ever received the approval of the Legislative Council. We rotor to the Grant-in-aid Scheme for Elementary Schools, a scheme which we have learnt to esteem as peculiarly Your Excelloney's own, and which has already stood satisfactorily the test of three years experience. By the provisions of that schema we are no longer dependent upon the elemosynary aid of the Government, but are enabled to resolve definite assist- ance for definite aid rendered to the State tu endeavouring to grapple with the dense ignorance of the continually increasing masses around us. As far as we are con- cerned the problem has been solved and that most satisfactorily, of the State afford. ing pecuniary help on the one hand, and our various denominations receiving the same on the other without the State there- by committing itself to any partienlar form of Christianity or our individual freedom. to impart, religious teaching Bocording to our "several convictions being impaired or interfered with,
