CORRESPONDENCE.

AN EXCEPTION FROM CANTON. To the Editor of the "CHINA MAIL."

Canton, June 19, 1876. SIA,I doubt not that my Countrymen generally will approve the general purport of your leader of the 17th inst, respecting American Consuls, especially in the light of the revelations to Siam; and you have

so fully set forth the facts and consequent | requirements of the case, that my sole object in now addressing you in to request you to be no considerate as to include the present Consul for the United States at Canton in your category of "high and honorable exceptions" for I am confid- sat that Mr Lincoln has already impressed his Countrymen as a capable, as well as honorable, Officer.

Mr Humplireys said he had shed the dog for about eighteen months. He kept it at Kowloong and it was a watch dog, a very good one and was valuable to him. He would pay more than $100 for a dog of that kind. It was perfectly reliable and was certain not to "bita. It was large enough to frighton strangers away,

We understand that the diffoulty which arose in consequence of the riots in 1874 between the French Municipal Council and the Niugpo Guild has at last been settled with what result we are not yet able to state.
