A departure from old customs and the introduction of something new on the part of the Chinese, however, without some foolish mistake, would be more than epuld be expected judging from past experiences; and in this matter of the introduction of the lights, the junkmon seem to have disregarded the importance of placing the proper light in its proper position. The red or port light was displayed on the starboard of the junks, and therefore made it extremely difficult for those in charge of the Fuyew to discover what they were approaching

Regina v Man Amo. The prisoner was indicted on three counts for burglary and larceny on the 23rd May 1876.

A house at Wanchai was broken into during the night of the 23rd May last, but an alarm was raised and the burglar or bur- glara had to decamp. A box was so re moved from its position as to constitute a larceny, and when searched was made the prisoner was found in the street. The evidence produced was not sufficient to identify him with being one of the burglars, and he was acquitted.

It appeared that the pri soner, the brother of the prosecutrix, was given the child to take care of during the temporary absence of the mother, a boatwoman, Be took care of it for a time, but latterly gave it to the third defer dant to pawn for him and received $13. The third prisonez in turn took it to the second prisoner who sold it to a woman for $191, All the prisoners ad- mitted as much, and the Jury had very little difficulty in finding them guilty. His Lordship reserved sentence, incidentally remarking that he was glad to find that the Chinese had come to know so much of the law for this class of offence. In the petition which the mother of the first prisoner sent in on behalf of her son, it was said if he would not be entirely pardoned, she prayed that dogging would not be inflioted on him. His Lordship could not promise that he would not do so, but he would consider the case.

The Sessions were then adjourned till to-morrow at 10 a.m.

A very tragical occurrence is reported from Seochow. The other day, a large fleet of forty salt-junks and fourteen amai gun-boats arrived at a placed calle Chen- feeh, about thirty miles from the city, with a view to trading. It so happened that a revenue cruiser with a small mandarin on. board pounded down upon them; and the junke, in order to save interference, offered him a bribe of a hundred dollars. The mandarin refused the offer, and declined to allow them to pass the barrier; whereupon the junkmen attacked the cruiser, shot the mandarin, eat him into eight pieces and threw him overboard. They then proceeded to destroy his boat; and the steersman, who seems to have been the only one, ont of a crew of forty people, who escaped, rushed with the story to the mandarins of Chén tech Helen, which is situated near the T'al Hu. They immediately despatched twenty Fouts, well armed, in pursuit of the marat- dors; but these persons had meanwhile con tinued the even tenor of their way, and found a ready market for their salt. They are still uncaptured, and our informant thinks that there is little chance of their being overcome.
