The first witness called was P. O. No. 10, Wm. Baker, who proved the finding of the body of the deceased in the house in question. Witness was on Charge Room auty, and was sout down by Sergeant Coat coran to bring the body to the ospital, we found traces of fluid of a light red colour at the garners of her mouth and on the front of her dress. The deceased was quite deau then. This was about 2 a.m.
Dr Wharry, M.D., Superintendent of the -Civil Hospital, stated that he bad wadə a post mortem examination of the deceased this morning. There were marks of on thaions and bruises about the mouth, and there was a bruise on the gum of the lower lip. There was no bruise on the outside. There were one or two atrasons on the surince of the templo. The witness spoke so inaudibly that much of his evidence was not heard though only at a few foot distanco. He was understood, however, to say that the deceased died of opium. The externai marks of bruises could 'not have been 'caused by the woman taking poison herself.] Wan Hiu Sheung, the husband of the deceased, was called in to have the evidence of the doctor read over to him. He ac- counted for the bruises about the mouth, by the fact that a brass justrument had been inserted into her mouth in order to open it and administer an ometio.
This witness was then deolared and ox. amined closely as to his previous life-when he married, and how often he had married. He could not account why the deceased took poison; she and his wife lived very domiortably. About a fortnight ago, the deceased told witness shat she had a dream

On Sunday, April 80th, between three and four o'clock in the afternoon, this Settlement was thrown into a state of con siderable excitement by the news spreading that a fight had taken place in the native town, near Ours, between two seamen nam ed Nicolas Geromino, aged 86, and Andres Rimon, aged 26, recently discharged from the British Barque Serpent. From what we can make out it appears that they had quarrelled, and from words got to blows, at length Rimon got possession of a dangerous weapon in the shape of a rake with four pronge about five inches in length, with which ha struck Geromino over the head, one of the prongs entering the bead to the extent of about three inches. The wounded man was immediately conveyed to the hospital, where he expired about 24 hours afterwarda, being quite unconscious form the time he received the blow until bis deutli. Rimon attempted to make his escape, but was arrested, near the Catholic Church, by order of the British Consol, and imprisoned.

Nowe from Chung-kien, yesterday, is to the effect that a persecution has commenced against the Christians of that city. Four converts were killed, many wounded, in that part of the city called Kiang-peh which lies across the creek, and more than one hundred houses destroyed. This had been expected for soure time, owing to a circular sent around of the people to exterminate foreigners and their proselytes, or something to that effect Should the Christians be compelled to rise en massa the Government will have to brace itself up for the occasion, as the converts number about 300,000 of the most enligh toned people of Sze-chuan.
