RUMOURS of an unsatisfactory nature reach us from Peking. Sir Thomas Wade is credited with being thoroughly exasperated at the dilatory manner in which the various promises made respeol» ing illegal transit duties, and other causes of complaint, have been fulfilled, and is alleged to have addressed some very strongly worded remonstrances to the Peking Government. On the other: band, the anti-foreign party is supposed to be exerting as much pressure as pos- sible to induce an invasion of any fur ther concessions. The situation is, in short, mid to be "anxious," and there are not wanting many to declare that war has seldom been more imminent,

We do not share such apprehensions in one sense. If the Chinese Govern- ment really believe that we will go to war to enforce any given concessions, these concessions will be at once made. But the long course of evasion and oh- structiveness pursued by the Chinese Government may force upon us at length

The junk sank almost immediately from the satura tion of the lime. The vessel was anchored in the river and had a light, but the night being dark, it could not be seen. There were nine people on board, consisting of the owner, his mother, wife, two sons, one daughter, and two assistants. The steainer stopped at once and throw down a rope from the bow, and the junk-master caught hold of it. The wife seized the husband by the aims and held a young son, aged about one year, by the mouth. Notwithstanding this weight, the husband managed to get up the steamer and all three were thus mayed. What argument was advanced against the continuance of the missions, perhaps cannot now be known, but one thing can be men- tioned, which may have something to do with it. Even a quarter of a century after the missionaries left Siberia, all converts were spoken of as belonging to the English, or rather as being Englishmen.
