A variety of other witnesses have been examined before the Committee, including several firemen and mission aries, the former giving the characteris tia apinion that the city of San Francisco would never be safe from destruction by fire so long as there was a Chinese quarter; and the latter that the Chinese would never become very moral until they have the fear of God before then, If, added one of these missionaries, the Chinese followed the teaching of Confu- cina and their Classics there would not be a more moral people on the face of the earth, If the Chinese would stay away he thought it would be better for them; their contact with the low Ame ricane was very bad for them I This, no doubt, is very flattering to the Californi- ana. One of the chief objections urged in California against the Chiness is the on immorality practised amongst them, For instance, at the same sitting of the Committee, a detective deposed that the Per JAVA, 4.80 p.m. on Wednesday, Chinese Quarter was the most degraded the 24th Inst, instead of as pre-place imaginable, and that "the alleys viously notified

One day I went to the Dook Company's office, and Mr Addyman told me to make out a bill. He, had a piece of paper, and told me to copy from that, so I took the paper to my shop and made out this bill. Mr Duncan and a friend of his wore in the office. Having made out the bill, I took it to Mr Addyman; I don't remember what other persons were present then. The Yes Hing shop never sold that metal. Mr Addyman had not asked me to fill up bills of that kind before nor after, but Mr Dundan had both before and after the occasion in question.

The witness was not orom-examined. The Court was then adjourned for a short Hime.

Thursday, the 25th, at 10.30 am.

Mr Russell here observed that he had gone very carefully into the case, and had come to the conclusion, that having regard to its magnitude, he did not think he could extend Mr Duncan's bail-certain things having developed themselves to-day which had not developed before. A Magis trate had power to refune bail in any case, and the reason he allowed Mr Duncan bail in the first instance was because he (Mr D.) had appeared on a summons. He then read from a law-book on the subject of bail

Mr Kingmill, in applying for bail, urged that what had transpired to-day was no worse than what was revealed before, in fact what had now taken place should form ground for leasening bail instead of refusing it.

Mr Rossell could not agree with Mr Kingsmill and called attention to. Mr Ad- dyman's evidence, which developed a ragu- lar system, and having regard to the mag- nitude of the amount involved, he thought it his duty to refuse Mr Duncan bail until the termination of the ease.

Both defendants were then removed in custody.

(Before the Hon. C. May.)

ALLEGED MÅNSLAUGHTER,

Mr O. V. Lang and Mr Joase Harrold, first and send Engineers of the steamer Kinehun, surrendered to their bail to an. swer the charge of causing the death of one Wong Ashow, passenger in the steamer on the 13th instant by the explosion of the super heater, caused, it is alleged, by their culpable negligences

Mr Brereton appeared for the defense. Capt. Cary was examined-On the 6th May, I was in command of the river steamer Kinshan, belonging to the Hong. kong, Cauton and Macao Steamboat Com. pany. The first defendant was the chief engineer, and the second defendant the second engineer on board. Our destina tios was Canton. We had about 850 Ohi- nese passengers. There was one European passenger. We started at 8 o'clook we had gone about four miles when the socid ent happened about 8.20. Sands; if I had any to make,I should have made it to the chief engineer. I wish to add that so far as I know of Mr. Harrold, he is a very trustworthy man, careful and competent in the discharge of his duties:

By Mr Brereton: I cannot say that I can positively recollect the patch on the plate in Court as the patch I had seen put on, There were several patches in the superhost. er. I don't know when the patch on the plate in Court was put on. I can only remem ber that there was a patch of that shape. I can not speak positively unless I saw the plate on the super-heater. The patah might have been put three or four months ago. I have seen Mr Harrold going inside the super-beater to examine it. ay him do this every Sunday during the me I was on board, with the exception of two Bundays when the steamer was running

Mr H, O. Bailio was next called, but had, however, no personal knowledge of the Kinshan's super heaters or boilers,

Inspector Grimes was naxt examined. He deposed to being in charge of the case,. and that the jury having gone over to see the steamer, and the plate in Court was the one where the burst had taken place.

Mr Brereton then addressed the Court, and contended that without the evidence of Mr Robb, there was not an iots of evidence against the defendants. He next laid stress on the fact of the chief engineer himself being on duty at the time of the soldent. Was it likely, he asked, that Mr Lang would risk his own life? He pointed out the indig. nity, inconvenience, expense, and anxiety of mind the defendants would be put to were they committed for trial, on a charge

which he was confident no Jury would con- viot on evidence so weak like this. Mr Harrold was proved to have examined the boilers every Sunday and to have taken very great care of them. Where was then the negligence. To find a man guilty of manslaughter, the negligence must be of the grossest kind. The law only required a man to exercise reasonable care aud akill.
