This journal states that the Sonate of Finland has voted a large sum of money for the opening of a water communication between the White Sea and the Baltic. ROYAL NAVAL REGATTA. The Naval Regatta came off to-day under very favorable circumstances, as regarde weather, such as weather goes in these damp-times.
A numerous company of residents assem- bled on board the Audacious by invitation, whero tiffia was provided. Amongst the guests were H, E, the Governor and Mias Kennedy, Mr Justice Snowden, Major General Colborne, Admiral Lambert, the Captains and flicers from the various Foreign and British men-of-war in barbour, and a numerous bevy of ladies, who seemed thoroughly to enjoy the novelty of being- on board a war versal. The arrangemente made for the comfort of visitors were on cellent, and the officers were indefatigabla in their endeavours to make every one comfe-table. The several events came off punctually at the time announced in the programme, but it was rather confusing, owing to a new race starting, before the preceding one was finished, and it was therefore somewhat difficult to follow the progress of each race. We have, therefore, found it neodesy to confine ourselves simply to giving the results.
Much amusement was caused by the cop- per punts, which were rigged in a most gro- teaque manner. That from the fudacious was a caricature of that noble ship, and was complete, with sails and funnel, nor was smoke wanting to make the imitation per- foot. 35 picals. An average dipper-full of mud was weighed, and found to contain 108 piculs, or about 14,400 pounds. By actual test, the machine delivered on the bank 63 dippers-full in 54 minutes. The ordinary working delivery will be about 42 dippers- full per hour. The distance at which the machine will deposit mud, on either side, is 30 feets on that with it, a channel 45 to 60 feet wide, and 35 feet deep, can be out, dud the mud deposited on the banks. By means of four handles and three treadles, one per son controls the application of the steam, the extending and retracting, the clevating and depressing of the dippers, and its motion from side to side. Five persons are sufficient for the successful working of the machine. The trial was successful.
