They should have arrived here last Mouday, as on Sun- day they had got to within sixty miles of Hongkong, but encountering a strong N. E, gale, they had to stand off again under *mail, as they were somewhat abort of fuel. They steamed from Singapore until Sunday. They saluted the Admiral (Ryder) as they entered the harbour, which compliment was responded to by H. M. B. Audacious,

At a meeting beld in Manchester the other day it was stated that the various insurance offices in the city and their connections had paid in losses from fires-principally in the cotton trade during the past year no less a sum than £1,100,000, whilst they had received in premiums only £800,000. A revision of the rate of insurance, which may be to the extent of 40 or 50 per cent., was announced,
The Telegraph Maintenance Company has been informed that the Admiralty will undertake to carry out a fresh line of sound ings between Penang and Rangoon, and that a vessel will shortly be ordered to the Straits on this duty. It will be remembered that communication with the Straite Settle ments was interrupted shortly after the commencement of the recent war with the Malay, and great inconvenience might have resulted.
Mr Hardy supposed the case the other night of a naval officer suddenly turning round to a body of slaves, and saying,. "Here is a ship of war belonging to Eng- land, and if you wish to escape from your masters here is a means of escape" and he Baid it had been argued by a great many people that that might fairly be done. Could that be done with any sense of honour or diguity on the part of the British nation?" Surely something very like this has been done whenever an English man-of-war has rescued a batch of slaves from a slave ship, and done with the highest sense of honour and dignity?
Astatute was promulgated in Congrega- tion at Oxford on Feb. 22 for the appoint- ment of Dr. Legge as Professor of Chinese, The Dean of Christ Church road a letter
from Sir Rutherford Alcock, in which be reproached the University for its past back- wardness as regarded Oriental studies, and represented that the opportunity of securing

Mr Sharp asked whether the symptoms abewn in the animal were the result of pro- longed exposure.
Dr Ayros thought the exposure to the weather would naturally bring about the symptoms.
Mr Sharp then asked if the nutritious quality of the meat would not be impaired by the exposure.
Dr Ayres replied that undoubtedly it would be,
MrSharp again asked whether, under the circumstances, decomposition would be likely to sot in sooner.
Dr Ayres replied that it would not be necessarily so.
Mr May asked whether Mr Sharp meant that the meat would be more speedily tainted, instead of decomposed.
Mr Sharp said he meant tainted. Dr Ayres replied that he could not speak positively on the subject, bins did not think the most of the animal would become more speedily tainted because of the condition it was in.
Mr May asked how the cattle were treated on the mainland were they housed i
Mr Bedell, the Court Interpreter, said they were invariably housed in the district from which he came, viz, Shuntak,
Inspector Orley said the animals, in individual cases, wero housed, but in the district of Namtow, the chief mert for cattle, they were not housed but were driven into an open enclosure. He had been there and seen it.
We have no further news with referenos to the negotiations concerning the murder of Mr Margaty; but I suspect that the Government is assuming a somewhat firm attitude, and has probably instructed Mr Wade not to put up with any evasÍONG. Mr Sharp observed that from what he Little things are sometimes alewa to show had seen of the animals here, they appeared the way the wind is blowing, and it is to be fat and sound on arrival, and it was noticeable that the Timer headed its last his opinion that deterioration set in after letter from its correspondent, "The Mur-importation owing to the exposure to which der of Mr Margary," instead of the oustom- they were subjected. ary heading merely of China.

Mr May said the point at lestie here A curious announcement comes from St. was a plain one, and he must confiue Petersburg, to the effect namely that the hugelf to the narrow limits of the The Market Ordinance provided Russian Government will, in all likelihood, oase, subsidize Russian steamers to China and against cattle being sent to the Slaughter India by paying them the sums they have House in a state unit for human food, and to disburse as dues for the Canal. preferred lean meat. The public would be thankful to Mr Sharp for having brought the case forward, but it was gratifying to find that the meat in this instance was not unft for food. The defendant not having committed a breach of the Ordinance, the case must be discharged.

Yesterday wo published a letter addressed by Mr Granville Sharp to the Military Authorities in reference to the question of diseased meat, and the reply to the same. Mr Sharp also addressed a similar letter to the Secretary to Admiral Ryder, and re- ceived the following reply

to load. An average passage from China and the Philipine Islands is 60 days; in stead of 40 days. The only vesroli in the Honolulu trado, apart from the monthly stoamor, are the era, D. G. Murray and Mary Belle Roberts. The first named two sailed during the last week of January, and ara supposed to be at Honolula now, while the last named only cleared from San Francisco the other day. How these three vessels are going to bring up over 8,000,000 Ibs Sugar in 40 days is not apparent, es......... poolally as they only average 400 tong register, and never carry exclusive enrgoon of Sugar. We think if a little more care had been exercised, no such reckless state- ment would have appeared in the paper” referred to. If believed, the information would demoralize the Sagar market for months. If our imports of this article are to average 500,000 lbs dally for forty days, against an average for previous years of less than 150,000 lbs per day, there can be only one effect on prices. If we are going to have 180,000,000 lbs Sugar this year, instead of 60,000,000 lbs, the fact is worth i knowing; but re presume the public will prefer to wait for a corroboration of the1 statement before accepting it. The papar will not be accused of an attempt to bear? the Sugar market, though the effect of the item is entirely in that direction.
H.M.S. Audacious, Hongkong, 6th April, 1876. SIE,-i beg to acknowledge the recept of your letter of the 3rd instant on the subject of diseased meat seen in the markets at this | place,
I have laid the same, with the extracts
from the local papers auclosed, before Vice-Admiral Ryder, Commander-in-Chief, who desires me to assure you that in his opinion the regulations of our service leave no loop-bole for the passing of indifferent fresh meat when received on board for the use of the ships' companies.

The clerk, as soon as the service was finished, rose up with all dae solemnity, and cried out am requested to give notice that there will be no service this afternoon, as Me L. is going fishing with another clergyman."
