It would appear that the necessary steps for this desirable consummation have hs

been already taken. An Engineer has been already appointed by the Siamese Government to survey the routes, and to take the necessary measures for erecting the line. The King is said to be deeply interested in the project, and there sp pears every prospect of its being success fully carried out. In such a case we should practically have not two but three lines from Singapore to Madras, and messages from China would correspond ingly benefit. The proposed duplicate line of the present Company need not, it is said, affect the decision of the Siamese, inasmuch so they can erect a land line at a fraction of the cost of an ocean cable for the same distance.
