23rd inst. That journal informs us that the Revised British Treaty was to have been signed on the 25th of this month! What revised British Treaty is the natural exclamation. Who drew it up↑ Whence comes it ? Is it the Treaty with the celebrated Burlingame addenda, or the old Treaty, or a bran new Treaty evolved from the in her consciousness of Lord Clarendon and Sir Rutherford Alcock! How does it happen that such usually well-informed papers as the Times, Pall Mall Gazette, ka, have missed the record of so important su event? Those and a thousand Bailar questions dart through the wind on the perusal of the extraordinary paragraph to which we refer, There is such an air. of candour too about the announcement that one feels irresistibly impelled to believe in its authenticity. The Daily Nees does not say that it learns or "is informed" or "is given to believe,* ont pablishes the item as a piece of local intelligence from Peking, with the remark that though not given as an authentic communication it will, it is believed, be found correct; in other words, that the news is derived from private sources and therefore very likely to be literally
true,
Of course under these circumstances we can at present only speculate upon the assumption of its being correct. And if such be the case we, in cooimon with every resident in China, can but express our extreme astonishment that so important an event should have been kept so secret. According to the Daily News the reason for taking action is that the Chinese have rejected the proposal for a revision four years hence, and so it has been decided to keep them to the terms of the agree ment as to a decennial revision. The first demand for, a personal audience (with the Emperor) has been rejected." So touch for their progress, and the breaking down of diplomatie barriers- but the clause as to Customs districts “ we are not very clear as to the mesuing of this term does it mean that the proposed improvements in transit-dues arrangements have been made t—has been accepted. It is not saying too much to declare that very great anxiety will be. felt throughout China to learn the pre- cise terms of this revised Treaty. Are we to understand that questions such as those of inland navigation, illicit mono- polies, appeal to Peking, the passport question, telegraphs, railways, etc, ethy 738 pieces and 40 packages Wood Ware, havo been passed over in silence and

IT can scarcely be assumed that the Chinese authorities at Peking were igno rant of the fact that the Duke of Edin burgh and Admiral Keppel were visitors to Peking.
