We are not defending the shroft, who 'was no doubt legally bound to give a stamped receipt, if it werd demanded. We are somewhat surprised to learn, that the official whose career offers the best hope of his efficiency if placed in sach posi tion is likely to be passed over in favour of an officer whose claims, despite his zeal and present appointment, are far inferior. Thern seem indeed to be. no two opinions in the Colony that: the proper man to succeed the present Cap tatu Superintendent, is Mr. Douglas, the Governor of the Gaol.
