In connection with Mr Deane's crushing reply to the misstatements of the Secretary of the Anglo-American Ma nicipal Council at Shanghie wo have been placed in possession of a return showing the vast change for the better which has taken place in the records of piracy and robbery in Chinese waters since 1864, In that year 34 piracies

were committed resulting in the murder of 13 individuals. 1865 saw no less than

50 piracies, the "Georg Andreas," "Hail way," and "Henry Darling," being the namos of the foreign vessels plundered, while 46 murders are reported as attend. ant upon these outrages. The year 1866 witnessed a decrease in the number to 35 piracids, though from four foreign vessela being attacked the Chin Chin, Mary June, Bonaventure, and Lubra-it is. probably recollected by residents as the most memorable in this way. Twenty. two pirholes took place in 1867, and fourteen in 1868, the Zeemont being the
