LONGKONG, WEDNESDAY, SEFT, 29, 1869..

We had hoped-being of a sanguine disposition that the remarks recently published not merely hy ourselves, hat by many influential British journals would have induced the Hongkong Chamber of Commerce bare taken sons action regarding the Western route to China scheme. All that is naked for is a disonation and expression of opinion on the part of that body. It may be that those who advocate it are visionary enthusiasts, or it may be that they are strong-minded practical men. But in any CAEB, their representations have attracted so much attention je so many quarters, that silence on the part of the Hongkong Chamber is almost discqurteous. The Chambers of Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds and Bradford, the Government of Indis, the British Commissioner in Bar mah and even the Shanghai Chamber of Commerce bave all expressed opinions and published correspondence bearing on. the matter. Yet our fellow colonists remain quiescent! Do they think that the trade of Hongkong would not be affected by such an undertaking? Is the trade route to China beyond the "scope" of the Chamber!

That the Foreign Office agencies have been talked about a great deal too much to permit their continuance everybody is aware, but we fancy that the Colonial Office has hitherto managed to escape the denunciations levelled against its mister department. We do not know, if the
