It is indeed a fit subject for discussion by the Chambers of Comicsree not merely in Ching but at Hongkong. With our interests so intimately affected by every act taken by such officials it is. proper and reasonable that Colonial opi nion should be markedly expressed upon the subject; and whatever may be the importance attached to the opinion of our local Chamber it is impossible that its deliberate condemnation of the course pursued by H. M. Government can fail to have some weight in the instructions liereafter issued. Success is snally held to consecrate a cause, whatever its object, if upon a sufficiently large state, but, Formosa is unfortunately too out of the way a place to attract much public atten tion. However, success has attended Mr Gibson's policy, whether justifiable or not in the eyes of the Foreign office,
