POLICE SUGGESTIONS.
MR. DEANE'S report upon the working of the police force during 1868, (published in Saturday's Gucernment Gazette), con- tains some interesting particulars. The decrease of serious offences owing, as the Superintendent believes, to the infliction of the punishment of flogging upon cris minals convicted of violent crimes, is a uost satisfactory feature, the retures showing a decrease of 13.8 per cent. in serious, and 2.9 per cent, in minor crimes
or a general average of 3.5 per cent. de Crease compared with 1867. Into the
particulars given of various offences it is nct however our purpose to enter: We taen rather to his suggestions as to increasing the efficiency of the police force under his command by means of improved meatus of communication. between the Central and Out-stations--a watter to which we have ourselves drawn attention. We are glad to see that Mr Deave more than endorses the views we have expressed as to the necessity of some instantaneous means of signalling from one station to another, and the outrage
of Sunday morning last londs additional weight to all that has been unged upon the matter,
The report, date the 4th February, notes that the cut-stations of Aberdeen, Stanley, and Showkawan had, owing in a great measure to the care of the Inspec tors stationed there, "bean exempt from any serious oriune,"
But as our readers
are well aware, the unhappy idea which has long prevailed amongst the native rowdies as to the inefficiency of our police force, led but a day or two since to the perpetration of an outrage a paral lel to which can only be found in the. early days of the Colony's existence-- certainly not since the reins of Govern- ment have been bold by Sir R.G. Mac- Donnell. It is needless here to recapi tulate the story yesterday published, or to speenlate which of the many ver sions in circulation is the correct one. It
is suficient to say that we may fairly assume the escape of the gang, if not indeed the death of the mufortunate

Mr Deane states his belief that a tele- graphic system is under consideration," We can only say that we sincerely trust such is the case. But as a certain time must be consumed in perfecting such armugements, there seems to be no earthly reason for any longer neglecting the plan we have suggested, which is inexpensive, effectual, and could be put in working order within forty-eight hoora of issuing the necessary directions Except as an adjunct it would not of course be a permanent arrangement, and the telegraph would soon and more effe tually supersede its aid except when it was advisable to give a general alarmi or "notice of a tire breaking out. As regards the cost of a telegraph there is no earthly reason why a portion of the large sui reserved for police purposes only, from the gambling licenses said to be should not be applied to it. His Excel lency may rest assured that any step Colony would meet with general appro tending so directly to the safety of the
bution.
