To judge by articles which have appeared in the Summary issued at that city, and in the Straits Times, it would appear that there are four schemes on foot, two of which are being actively pushed forward by their projectors. The first is the old and comprehensive plan projected in England, which embraces a connection between Ceylon, Singapore, Java, and Australia, and to which a line to Hongkong may he eventually joined up.. The second is that of Colonel Fraser, who proposes to join Rangoon and Bangkok, trusting that self-interest will lead the managers of oxisting and future lines to connect up with these two termini. Both of these projects however want the vitality conferred by the countenance and abroad, and it is with the two latter of the guarantee of well-known business men four that we in Hongkong have most to Messrs W. be true and if the French Government has taken up the matter there is every reason to bolieva it is--Saigon will ero long be in telegraphic communication with Europe. Our French neighbours are seldom behind-hand in matters of this sort, as the Government takes the part usually carried out amongst ourselves by individual enterprise. Such * consummation would doubtless hold out a powerful inducement to Hongkong capitalists, although in case of war communication via Baigon would probably be stopped. With this drawback in view we were naturally gratified to find the following paragraph in the Straits Times, descriptive of a fourth scheme, which is not only locally supported bat which would at once place Hongkong in direct communication with British termini
