The publication is altogether a very in- teresting one, and wishing it every success, wo commend it to the attention and support of our readers.

HONGKONG, WEDNESDAY, JAN. 27, 1869,
TROUBLE AT FOOCHOW. ANOTHER Rinor" outrage upon missiona- ries"- sentence which has become a standing news-hrading in the China jour- nads-is reported from Fiochow, So com- ou has intelligence of this patare become, that it scarcely attracts attention, but on the present occasion a novel element bas been inported into the matter. The Elimlest advocates of Chinese rights can no longer shut their eyes to the fact that the inhabitants of the seaboard have, al- wost simultaneously, resolved upon efforts to exterminate the foreigner, or at least drive him to take shelter upon the bosoni of that ocean which, it is believed amongst the Chinese peasantry, is his natural home. We do not agree with those who refer the attacks upon mis sionaries to any religious" feeling or to any indignation at outraged beliefs." It simply happens that while the sword has undoubtedly been the pioneer of missionary short--for the free right of teaching and travelling was secured, under coercion, by the Treaty of Tientsin --missionaries are frequently in turn the pioneers of foreign intercourse. They are ostensibly peaceful in their habite, and, whilst very unprotected, represent the ideal foreigner who knows a great deal too much." Tu our belief no very definite conception is formed in the popular mind of why or how the mis- sionary is a representative energy, beyond the fact that he advocates change, the idea most abhorrent to the well organized native mind. "Change" is a vague word and is, under the infience of astute sab-officials and literati, easily expanded to mean anything whatever. The wor ship of ancestors he condemns, and this is exaggerated into an utter de nial filial obligations. And so his food, his clothes, his books, his scientiñe know-- Jedge and upparatus, each foreshadow in a vague way the uprooting of familiar and cherished traditions. It is not that his mission is purely religious or medical that it is opposed so much, that the natives caimot comprehend (with the for- eigh merchant and partially pidgin-wh glicised native dealer before their eyes) the idea of a "mission prompted by high or holy motives. The merchant is less molested because his object-dollars is clear, and if he gets them is not like
