(From the Friend of India," June 4, 1868. We acknowledge with thanks the receipt of the numbers for the current year of Notes and Queries," a most deserving Anglo Chinese monthly, edited by Mr N B. Denny,

whose Treaty Porte of Chins and Japan' are so well known. From the names attached to the "Notes" we can see that the contributors include spine of the beat Chinese scholars in the East. Its in terest is not confined to China, and it will be of valuable assistance to all scholars, who. have directed their attention towards the subject of Buddhism and its literatore, and generally to all who are interested in ori ental antiquities. It deserves to be better khown in India.

This really useful volume [Treaty Port of China and Japan is intended as a guide for travellers and residents in China und Japan, and as a book of reference for merventile men generally. It contains" account, historical and political, of all the open ports of these countries, together with Peking, Yedo, Hongkong, and Macza. It has been carefully compiled and edited by Mr N. B. Dennys; and the elaborate map. and plans, with which the work abounds, considerably enhance its salos. ***

Wo have thus given in outline some of the more prominent portions of the chapter, devoted to Canton, as a specimen of the whole volume, Other chapters tresting of MAGRO, Formosa, Ningpo, Shanghae, and the remainder of the treaty ports, we can. only enumerate The pages describing Peking, the capital, are so interesting, and contain so much that is new to European readers respecting its history, public buil. diaga, and general characteristics, that we would fain transfer them to our columna, A complete and intelligible plan of the Im- perial City and neighbourhood, gives us an accurate notion of the relative position of bits divisions, streets, and places."

In the introductory chapter to the notices of the Treaty Ports of Japan will be found sa uccinct history of that Empire, together with remarks on ita government, geography, nd limits, which will be found particularly & considerable light interesting as throwing & ons part of the world so long entirely, and still comparatively, unknown to Europeans. The descriptions of Nagasaki, Yedo, Yo- kohama, and the other Treaty Furta of Japani, are na elaborate and entertaining a those of the Chinese porte. A cogious in- dex and a useful appendix containing many hints and mach appropriate advice to tra vellers and others, is also included in the talume. The entire work affords a vast amoant of information, pleasantly written, and we doubt not will bo perused with interest by many who will never visit the Eastern seas.
