Some time ago we had occasion to remark upon the progress that Literature as repre. sented by the Prese had made and was making in the East, and our attention bas
again been called to the subject by the re- ceipt of a Hongkong publication which deserves some notice and which we bare
much, pleasure in introducing to the know ledge of our readers. We allude to Notes and Claries in hina and Japan, published
China Mail newspaper. This publication
in well printed on godd paper, and in size
and shape is very like its well-known DAWG-
sake or prototype at home, and is equally a

We acknowledge with thanks the receipt of the numbers for the ourront year of *Notes and Queries," a must deserving Anglo-Uhinese monthly, edited by Mr, N. B. Dennys, whose "Treaty Ports of China and Japan" are no well known. From the names attached to the "Notes" we cas nes that the contributors include some of the best Chinese sabolars in the East: Its in- terest is not couflzed to China, and it will be of valuable sesistance all coliolars, who have directed their attention towards the subject of Buddhism and its literature, and generally to fail who are interested in ori ental antiquities. 16 deservos to he better known in India.

This really useful volume [Treaty Forts of China and Japan" is intended as a guide for travellers and residents in Chins and Japan, and as a book of referelice for mercantile much generally. It contains an account, historieni and political, of all the|| open ports of these countries, together with⠀⠀ Peking, Yado, Hongkong, and Macao. It has been carefully compiled and edited by Mr N. B. Deye; and the elaborate maps and plans, with which the work abonde,! considerably enhance its value. ***
