Borioboola Gha, has made known to Europe a frot in connection with the progress of civilization and Christianity in China that the local press-ourselves included-shond long ago, it would seon, have published to the world. The. Chinese, it appears, a10 stricken with an insatiable craving--not for `opium but...---- for defaced postage-staina, with which they ornament their lamps, umbrellas, the very walls of their rooms, and buy them by the million at the rate of one dollar per hundred. Any gentleman

with one million postage stamps collected from his recent correspondence can resti- ly obtain the neat sum of $10,000 for the fot. But gentlemen are not expected to find in this commodity, eagerly sought For though it be, a compensation for losses in piecegoods or for flatness in the silk market; they are implored to devote their collections to a philanthropical purpose, and to assist the Rhenish Missionary Society with the proceeds derived from the sale of their stamps, in order that the agents of that. Society in Farious parts of China may be enabled to rescue and educate children left de serted by their parents.

Now, in the face of the very positive assertions of Pastor Maurach, far be it from us to deny that the Chinese adoru their lamps and umbrellas, way, their pigtails and their chopsticks, with Hani- burg and Bavarian postage stamps: more things exist in their philosophy, we know, than most men dream of; but the ramark may ba-permitted that we, at. least, are not yet eye-witnesses of this: custom. Not only is it unknown is Hongkong, but our most sedulous inqui ries have failed in discovering any pr son who has ever heard of such & practice. The Rhenish Society have their headquarters in this Colony, yer no mortal resident has been publicly implored, as by Pastor Maurach, to sur render his stamps for the beneds of uneducated infauts. What is to be thought on this subject! We confess to a feeling of boundless curiosity. Is the 4story really true, or is Pastor Maurach a myth-an unmitigated humbug or a victim to some fantastic missionary's mystification? With such an appeal to the public before us as that we extrat from the London and China Express,
