HONGKONG, WEDNESDAY, DEC. 16, 1868.

WE direct the attention of our readers to the news from Yangchow, as given in another column. If this be true, the Rodney (whose capture, we lesen from another source, is part of Li bung chang's imputed programme) will have more work cut out for her, and the Regimente here in garrison may yet see "active" service" in China.

THE AUSTRIAN EXPEDITION TO THE FAR EAST. (Continued)

THE Commissioners of German Austria were selected for their respective qualis. sations, from nearly 150 competitors all of them have a full acquaintance with the English and French languages, and some with the Italian; they are salaried by, and under the instructions of, the Goverument, to whom they have to communicate the result of their researchés: and experiences; and it is hoped that in- this way new channels of commerce and industry will be opened between their "Fatherland" and the countries they. visit; and that their friendly reception and the assistance accorded to them by residents in China will enable them to return to their home with pleasant re- membrances of the Far East, and a successful issue to their exertions.

The diplomatic section, at the head of which is the Councillor of Legation, Baron von Herbert, comprises in addi- tion the Secretary of the Legation, Baron Trautenberg, and the Attachés of Em. bassy, Baron Rangonnet and Ghyza von Bernas. From this it would seem almost beyond doubt that a permanent Austrian Embassy at Peking is one of the objects of the expedition; after which, should Austrian interests require it, there can

be as little doubt, but that those interests will likewise in due time be officially represented in Japan and Slain.

The third Section of the purposes of the expedition, is the establishment, of Consulates at the open ports of Chins and neighboring countries; the charge of this is entrusted to Consul General Heinrich de Calice, late Austrian Consul be entitled to the same privileges in regard at Liverpool, assisted by the Chancelliers to Letters sont by ur addressed to them on de Consnint Rudolph Schlick and Ladia their own private affairs as are at present
