Our, readers will have little difficulty in poreciving that we refer to the case of the two Chinese who murdered the un- fortunate Yancey. We use the assertion designedly, as their own confession fixed the guilt upon them. As a record of the administration of criminal law in Hongkong is a warning to the home authorities of the farce into which the Jaws against murder have degenerated- and as an illustration to our foreign friends of the beauties of English juris. prudence we will recall the chief fea- tures of the case in question. It will be understood that in thus doing we cast no imputations of sight but injudicious panotilicusheas as to the letter of the law upon the Chief Justice or Attorney General. That in the exercise of their discretion they have however inflicted deep injury upon tho foreign community. of the Colony, and impressed the native mind with a contempt for our law which is most deplorable, is, we think, ud doubted. The former is however a mat- ter of opinion the latter one of prove-
able fact.

The story of the murder, condensed from the voluminous accounts which. appeared at the time was, shortly, as follows: The Union Deck Company had in their employ an American named Yancay. He lived in a bungalow apart from the works, with a Flakka girl and Chinese servant At 1.15 a.m., on the morning of the 18th September last,--
