(From the Lolon Examiner," May 10, 1606.) This really useful volume ["Treaty Ports of China od Japan" is intended ng a guide for travellers and residente in China and Japan, and as a book of reference for mercantile men generally. It contains an account, historical and political, of all the open ports of these countries, together with Peking, Yedo, Hongkong, and Macao. It has been carefully compiled and edited by Mr N. B. Dennys; and the elaborate toapa and plans, with which the work abounde, considerably enhance ita value.**

Other chapters treating of Macao, Formons, Ning, Shanghae, and the remainder of the treaty ports, we can The pages describing only enumerate. Poking, the capital, are so futeresting, and contain so much that is new to European tf readers respecting its history, public buil dinge and general characteristics, that we would faiu transfer them to our columns. in the introductory chapter to the notices of the Tranty Torts of Japan will be found a coinct history of that Empire, together with remarks on its government, geography, and Kaits, which will be found particularly a considerable light interesting as throwing a ou a part of the world so long entirely, and still doingaratively, unknown to Europeans.

The descriptious of Nagasa, Ports of

Treaty Por Japan, are as elaborate and entertaining as those of the Chinesa

CHINESE FOR, MERCANTILE MEN,

THE controversy which has so long had place respecting the acquisition of a Chi nesa dialect by mercantile employés, is”- by no means settled, and we observe that our northern contemporaries have again adverted to the subject. The arguments against assistants devoting themselves to such a pursuit are perhaps

more cagent than enthusiastic students are willing to adrait. We must, of Course,

dismiss all question of exceptional talent on the part of individuals. Where

it exists, it is tolerably sure to become" developed, as most men employed in the ordinary duties of European life, are if peculiarly gifted as linguists likely ts. excel in that acquirement from an inbert interest in such studies quite apart from: commercial interest. Nor can we take. the Consular or Customs officials, the mombers of the missionary bodies, or other professional men as illustrations of suc 710 packages and 250 pieces Nall Rods, cessful atuly. ceptions, men who have deliberately accepted positions for which a study of the language is a sine qua non, and Occasional resignations result from the discovery of an absolute incapacity in this direction. We have therefore to deal only with Europeans of ordinary education differing no doubt greatly in degree, but seldom of particularly murkable Lequirements. And the ques tion to be settled is--whether it be worth the while of a nian, to whom study apart from his own department of business is distasteful, to devote himself. to the most difficult language in the world for the advantages he would goin by direct communication with the na

tives!

.

....

We have taken some pains to make- ourselves acquainted with the opinions ontartained by sibers of all classes, and particularly of those who, now janiers, will in time become the successors, of the leaders in commercial matters. The result of our enquiries points to two conclusions. (1). That the general ge quirement of any dialect of Chinese by the mercantile classes is extremely un likely, and finds no favor in commercial circles. But that (2) it is generally admitted that there are special depart- ments in commercial life in which even Gpkgs. dialect would be exceedingly useful; and a competent knowledge of the written character still more so. A check on the native traders, snch an European gente man could impose would, it is admitted, be often of much value. An idea would therefore seem to be entertained that a knowledge of Chinese on the part of one employé of a firm would be highly desir able; and that in order to secure this special acquirement the few possoming it should, like Ten-tasters" or "Bilk men," receive a higher salary in cou deration of adding interpreterial func tions to the usual work performed by mercantile assistants. There would th be no unfair stress Isid upon assistants as a body, while the few who added Chinese to their business acquirements would at least be incited by tangible advantages, and would escape. the "chaft" which usually attends a sentimental devotion to Chinese studies on the part of commercial men.
