(From the "London Examinar," May 16, 1869.)
This really useful volume [Treaty Ports of China, and Japan"].is tended sa a guide for travellers and residente in Chica and Japan, and as a book of refolence fo mercstilo men
generally. It contains accout, historical and political, of all the open ports of these countries, together with Peking
Yedo, Hongkong, and Macao. It has been carefully compiled and edited by Mr N. B. Dennys and the elaborato mapa ated plans, with which the work abounds, considerably enhance its value. **
We have thus given in outline some of the more prominent portions of the chapter devoted to Canton, us a specimen of the whole volume. Other chapters treating of Macao, Fornica, Ningpo, Shanghae, and the remainder of the treaty ports, we can only enumerato, The pages describing Pekings
the capital, are so interesting, and contain so much that is new to European readers respecting its history, public buil dings, Fuid general characteristics, that we would faju transfer them to our columns. A complete and intelligible plan of the In- parint City and neighbourhood, gives us an Accurato notion of the relative position of
its divisions, streets, and places.
In the introductory simpler to the notions of the Treaty orls of Japan will be founti a succinct history of that Empire, together with remarks on its government, geography, and limite, which will be found particularly interesting as throwing a a considerable ligh on a part of the world so lang entirely, and atili
comparatively, unknown to Europeans. The descriptions of Nagasaki, Yedo, kobama, and the other Treaty Ports of
elaborate and Japan, are 'as
entertaining as those of the Chinese ports. A copions in- dex and a useful appendix containing many hints and much appropriate advice to tra- vellera and there, is also included in the volume. The entire work afforda a vast arount of information, pleasantly written, and we doubt not will bo perused, with interest by many who will never visit the Bestern seas,

Ix introducing the Building Ordinance for a second reading, Sir Richard Mac- Donnell remarked that it bad bean drafted upon suggestions by the Survey- or General; but he feared there existed a good deal of misunderstanding as to the objects kept in view by those who framed its provisions." His Excellency was right. At least we may presuma that the real object intended, and that which is but too unfortunately obvious on the surface, are separate and distinct From the construction of the bill in its present state there has arisen a' wide- spread belief, not merely in professional but in general, circles that the object kept in view by the framers was to monopo lize the whole architectural private pra
tice of the Colony, and by means of the
sud from the Canton Custom Boose, by the act to squeeze the pockets of the build Native Craft during the weak ended 18thing owners. We do not for an instant. October,

alluded to as having fallen we would diffidently beg to enquire whether His Excellenoy referred to the Chinese house on the Point near the Police Station? and if so, whether the admirably con- structed praye and anything to do with its downfall on any of the three cccnsions Further details respecting this particular case would be cinently interesting in an architectural point of view. But, why did His Excellency ge to Kowloong for an exauiple? Are there none nearer the Peak-the Harbor Master's office for instance The walls of that building wre, we believe, severely correct as to measurement, but it is daily threatened with the fate which "pointed. the moral in His Excellency's remarke!
