The singalat custom which has fam time immemorial prevailed of giving pos thumous titles to Emperors, by which they are known in subecquent history, while they are contemporaneously spoken of by their reigning desiguations, added to the nasatisfactory system of reckoning hy means of aycles, has puzzled the brains of many whose work or recreation it bas been to consult the records of the past it. China; and the best thanks of these and we venture to think of the general reader, also at tinas-will be ungrudging ly given to the learned and painstaking compiler of these tables.
