It may thus be conjectured that maay, whose latest acquaintance with Fiji je bis ed upon these and similar accounts, will be astonished to learn that the King of Fiji has entered into written engagements with an Australian company whereby he sedes a large amount of land, banking monopolies, etc., etc., and that in fact the natural law of progress is likely to re yonge the former custom of Fijline eat- ing white men, by white men devouring in a vary literal senar, as regards the fir Lure destinies of the natives, the King chiefs, mannibals, islands and all
The Sydney Morning Herald of the 15th ultimo, contains a lengthy commu nication from the Fijis, in which the matter (which has been previously allud ed to in these columns) is set forth in detail By this it appears two galle meu-Messrs Brewer and Evans-bad been appointed as delegates from 3 Company formed in Melbourne who wer desirous of obtaining largo concessions in Fiji. It is well known that the America Government has for many years main tained a claim for compensation, raised on behalf of certain US citizens who property had been destroyed, against the King of Fiji. The claim, so far as we are able to judge, was well founded, though we have no means of judging as to its mo- deration or excess. But this has little. to do with the matter.
