THE SWIMMING BATH AND

PRAYA..

THE remarks put forth in our last Fri. day's issue regarding the removal of the Swimming Bath resulted in our being in- formed that the committee were unjustly credited with a wunt of energy in the matter. We are sincerely glad to learn that such is the case, though we are still of opinion that a general meeting of thoso interested in the maintenance of the structure in its present position would

have more emphatically marked the strong public interest felt in the matter, than the efforts, suficiently strenuous which the Secretary is now making, to definitely ascertain His Excellency's in- tentious in the matter. The delay in coming to an understanding arise, we believe, from the dificulty felt by the Governor in deciding upon a suitable site at which to re-erect it after removal. He is fully aware that to remove it to Kowloong would place a practical pro hibition upon its general use; and, while most desirous to have it taken away from its present site, is equally desirous to select another which shall as far as pos sible meet the views of the bathing cour munity. A bint has been given of se lecting the sea frontage of the Commis sariat buildings; and assuming (which we trust there is no absolute need to doj that the bath must be removed to a dis tance from its present site, the position · in question is perhaps, the next best which could be selected, But the shal lowness of the water, the nature of the For SHANGHAI→

The efforts made to improve the ex Wed-tended Prays sufficiently evince the wishes of the Governor on the former point. But, in continuation of the marks we made to a previous issue, wa must urge upon his attention the incon veniences, to which we then alluded. It must be noted that the width of the present roadway is entirely insuficient to render it either a favourite or even. useable promenadle for the Colony gene rally; and as we learn that a proposition we made some time since is very generally approved, we would again call attention to it. This is, to carry the "Queen's Road" past the Eastern face of the City Ball and within the row of trees now planted on the bathing Praya, closing ng tha
