with an Asiatic nation-rather that of aggression than of conciliation. If it be indeed true, as we believe, that he has. been persuaded into a step so injudicious as a postponement of the revision, the evidence of his nutitness for the post of British Minister will, (our theory of home inspiration aside) have become so overwhelming as to justify strong repre- sentations for his recall ou the part of the British Community in China. We trust that at all events every effort will be made by those who are bound to take the initiative in such matters-the Chambers of Commerce-to sift the truth of the report, and, if it be founded on fact, to take immediate aution. No possible rea suus which can be urged in favor of Sir R. Alcock's idea can outweigh the un- doubted evils which may result from its being carried out. We await with some impatience detailed news from the North upon the mutter.
A NEW periodical, to be called the China Magazine, will be issued on the 7th inst., and readers of our advertising columns will observe that it offers some novel features. Each part is to contain photo graphic views or pictures from nature, and subscribers to it will bare the oppor tunity of making a valuable collection of illustrations of Chinese life and scenery, The literary matter promised acetos good, and we await the first number with much interest Mr C. Langdon Davies will edit it, and we wish him every success in an undertaking, no less bold thun novel. in many of its features. At no previous period were there so many avenues for communicating interesting particulars re- garding the Chinese to the British pub- lic. The contributions in the China Ma gazine will, it is said, be rather of an amusing than scientific nature, but we have little doubt they will possess a valne even to those who desire something more than the mere apusement of a few apare balf-hours.
