The total expenditure of the Gaol in 1937 was $1,021,593.04 of which the sum of $1,672.00 was refunded for the subsistence of Military Court Martial prisoners, Debtors, &r., us follows :—

The average time allotted for sleep is about 11 hours in 24.
The cells of the Hong Kong Prison are artificially lighted throughout with independent switches for eacli pair of cells to illuminate when required,
The cells of the Victoriu Gaol are not artificially lighted, but lights are kept burning in all passages ail corridors, and the patrols on duty are provided with lamps to throw light into the cells when required.
At Lai Chi Kok prisoners sleep in association in lighted Halls,
Patrols are on duty in Victoria Gaol throughont the night, and patrol the corridors, passages und yards of the prison constantly, The patrols are visited at frequent intervals by a Principal Warder.
At Lai Chi Kok the patrols are behind a grille through which they supervise the prisoners. They are frequently visited by senior officers,
The Female Prison is artificially lighted throughout. Wardresses patrol at night.
Hong Kong Prison was opened in January, but it was not fully neempied mutil 26th September, 1937 awing to incomplete delivery of Ineks. Lai Chi Kok Malo Prison was depopulated and closed on 28th Ja- mmary, 1937, Victoria Guol was depopulated gradually during the year and entirely closed down on 26th September, 1937.
The number of primers reported during the year was 437; they were punished in the manner detailed below, viz.:—
